I am a lifelong student of military history
with a particular interest in the Civil War.
It
started as a small lad in the early 60s (that’s
1960s!). I received the The Golden
Book of the Civil War, with an introduction
by Bruce Catton. Fond memories of poring
over the maps and seeing the tiny soldiers
of the Blue and Gray blazing away in lines
of battle remain with me still.
My perspective comes from a 28 year career
in the United States Army. Travels took
me to World War II battlefields in Europe and
the Pacific where American valor ended the
tyranny of Nazism and Empire. America
faced its greatest challenge eighty years earlier
during the Civil War. And it was
the critical summer and fall of 1862, when
Robert E. Lee launched the Maryland Campaign,
that fortune could have gone either way.
A passion of mine is the individual stories
of the leaders and men who came here. Antietam
was one day of their lives - an important and
for some, final day - but just one day none
the less. How they got here and where
they went afterward is for me a great interest.
I am pleased to offer my interpretation to
groups and families of all sizes and truly
enjoy sharing the story with young and old
alike.
So join me in exploring the Maryland
Campaign. Our
journey will take us to the
quiet fields and
woodlots around Sharpsburg,
to places famous
and obscure, where
America’s fate was
decided. It is a sacred
place where 23,000
Americans fell defending
their way of life.
